Today is my precious firstborn son's 8th birthday. Mason is still VERY active like any 8 year old boy and silly and crazy and funny and sweet. But this year it has been a priviledge to see him transitioning into more maturity. We bought him a Bible at the beginning of this school year and he just loves to read it. He looks stuff up and, on occasion, actually ponders what he reads! He has been asking thoughtful questions and is genuinely concerned for people's eternal status before God. Such a blessing!
He is becoming a little man with some toughness and embarrassment thrown in when we are out in public, but he is still so sweet! Once in a while he will still snuggle with me on my lap in the morning when he first wakes up. This is getting harder and harder to do with each passing day because he's so tall and BONY! The kid is nothing but muscle and bones... and skin.
Usually, Mason changes his mind every day about something that is his "favorite." If a CD comes on, he and Kaiah will tell each other what their favorite songs are. Kaiah's will be pretty solid, but Mason's change with each one... "This one's my favorite!... No actually this one's my favorite. Oh, yeah! I mean this one's really my favorite." He just can't decide when it comes to a flavor for something or what activity he wants to try. So when he said he wanted a bird birthday party and didn't change his mind for a few months, I knew he was serious (about birds)!
I decided last minute (OK 2 days before) to have a bigger party for him. We had just planned on having Isaiah (his fellow 7 year old birding enthusiast friend) over for a slumber party and take them to the bird festival. But I somehow get myself into trouble and ended up inviting 9 or 10 (I lost count after a while) little boys and their families over for a party where the little guys were weilding hammers and putting together wooden bird feeders that Cliff had individually sawed. I'm not sure what I was thinking... but God did protect them, all of them! No one was injured. (Except I think my friend Jenn wanted to hurt me because she now has two bird feeders at her house and she has an intense bird phobia... Hmmm. Sorry Jenn!) I also don't know what I was thinking having it at 6:30 at night. Our neighbors must have wondered what in the world was going on in the dark at our house with a bunch of little boys yelling and hammering away. (Well, hollering happened after they were done pounding.)
The moms talked in the living room and the girls (sisters of all the boys) played dress up in the playroom.
Then the boys enjoyed their ice cream sundays (Mason's choice) with gummy worms and nerds "bird seed" as toppings. They went a little crazy with the whipped cream and were making Jason kinda nervous...
So when he regained control of the can, all was well again.
Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we had a nice time with close friends celebrating Mason's birthday!
Happy 8th Mason! We love and treasure you more than a million birds!

A nice touch would have been to show the movie "The Birds." No? Why not?
Happy Birthday to Mason! When Elliot was that age, he got more serious about Bible reading too, and he used to "lead" the twins in "devos." I overheard one of these sessions from the end of I Samuel, about the death of Saul. Elliot was asking very seriously, "How else were they killed? What other body parts were cut off?" Uh yeah. I did ask Janean if that's how Scott started off but she didn't answer.
What an awesome big-boy birthday party. The houses look great! I know a lot of birds around town are going to be living in style.
Too bad there was no way to capture the wonderful smell out on the patio while they were building. ;)
Yeah, too bad...
