Oceanside 2012

My dad has a sweet deal set up with a former co-worker of his. The guy has a family home that has been passed down through the generations and was one of the original houses in the town of Oceanside. When the family is not using it, they occasionally rent it out and when it's empty, my mom and dad can go stay as long as they bring some firewood for the stove. My dad is a big chopper of wood and they go at least 2 or 3 times a year. Sometimes they invite us!

Their house is one of the two that are right on the beach!

Enjoying breakfast in the little nook.

These guys land on the beach in right front of the house!

Cliff and the kids running from the cold waves.

Hunting for Agates at the beach on the other side of the tunnel with Baba.

Playing in the sand!

While we have many happy memories of this place, the sneaker waves are horrible, and will knock you off of your feet. And this particular time, while we were getting ready to go home, the tsunami sirens went off! Since we have no cell service there, we didn't know what was going on. The kids started to panic! Cliff made me stop what I was doing (sweeping), throw the kids in the car, and get all of our stuff as fast as possible so we could get to high ground. My parents didn't know what to do.

Our first thought was that it was probably a training drill. But when the second siren rang a couple of minutes later, the kids all started screaming from their seats. I didn't even get to say goodbye to my parents! And as we drove away through town, there were people walking their dogs on the beach, smoking their cigarettes outside their shops, looking as calm as can be, and shaking their heads at us like we were lunatics...

I called my mom at the house phone when we got within range, to say goodbye... They had walked up to the town and asked someone. It turns out that it was a drill! They have scheduled sirens every 2nd Monday of the month (or something like that). Well that might be something good to include on the side of the fridge or something! Haha. Well, in addition to all the fun beach stuff we can add this to our memorable experiences here in Oceanside.
