The kids had a great time with track last year and we had hoped to find something similar to participate in. I contacted the home school forums and no one had heard of any ways to participate, so I had pretty much given up.
But one day while hanging out with my excercise group (I'll write about them later), Mason was challenged to a race down the beach. He won! And one of my new friends noticed that he was pretty fast. She said, "You should have them run track with Renegades!" It was perfect timing. They were starting in a week or so and prices were so reasonable, we had all the three older kids sign up!
Everyone was welcome to join, homeschool or public, so even though we didn't know very many people, we were welcomed right in. Also, it was really fun to recognize people from other areas we had gotten involved were there. Mostly from AWANAs and the exercise group. But one of them turned out to be a neighbor of ours as well.
It was great exercise for the kids and I would often run around the track as well while waiting for them.
Cambria, however, was not really into it. She liked it for a while, but when we started the meets on Saturdays, she was not impressed!
Kaiah and Mason, however, thrived. They set goals, worked hard to achieve them, and listened to and implemented every thing that the coaches told them. We received several comments from their various coaches about how well they listen and what good form they had.
The hot summer days in the sun waiting at track meets and practices were helped with a lot of water, snacks, and the sportbrella. That thing has been wonderful!
Mason was able to try a new event out, high jump! Although he needs to work on his form quite a bit, he got 2nd place in the high jump for his age category!
These pictures are so funny to us, because as he was jumping, he realized that he did it wrong and laughed at himself the whole way up :)
Kaiah also excelled, but the day of the
qualifying race, her sugar went down into the 40s and she missed the
heat for one of the races. That meant she was out for the finals as she had been placing in the top 8 before that... She did get 2nd place in the long jump for her age group!
Cambria never did qualify for anything... but she was always really cute (even with a frown) while doing it.
We loved track here. It gave the kids something constructive to do, goals to work toward, and it got us a little bit more involved in our community.
