Christmas in Hawaii! (2013)

Christmas in Hawaii... Very different than Oregon!

They do decorate their trees... but there might be lemons hanging from them!

They watch the Aloha Bowl on Christmas Eve... (We went because OSU was playing)!

They make sandmen instead of snowmen.

They either don't get a tree, or they get one from Whole Foods.

It cost $60 for this puny tree!

The trees that they use here are most often the Norfolk pine. They do ship in Douglas firs, but those can be up to $150! So we did the best we could and set ours up in a pot of sand. it worked pretty well! Until I had the bright idea of watering it. The sand collapsed, and started to slosh out the holes at the bottom of the pots before collapsing. It dropped many of the ornaments and wouldn't stay in place.

To solve this problem, we anchored it by four points to the couch and window. But that didn't last long, because the cats chewed through the ropes!

The ornaments kept falling off because the branches are not stiff at all! It looked like a little wimpy Charlie Brown tree, but it provided plenty of fun memories!

I don't know what we'll do next year. I wouldn't be surprised if we took a different angle. There are some fun ideas on pinterest!

But one thing's for sure, we have some traditions that we always plan on doing. Like decorating, passing out Christmas cookies to our friends and neighbors, watching the Grinch and other fun Christmas time movies, and waking up to Everybody Dance Now and eating cinnamon rolls while exchanging gifts.

We even played Mom's wacky game of Merry, Merry Christmas via facetime :) Can't leave that one out!

We missed getting together with family and old friends, but it was a pretty sweet time of celebrating Christmas with just our family and some new friends, discovering some of the interesting holiday differences on an island in the middle of the Pacific.

We got Norfolk pines in Mauritania, and then planted them in our yard. We visited last year and one is HUGE now! Sure you can only do about 6 ornaments, but it's still fun.
