Honolulu Zoo

Our neighbor has sort of adopted our kids as her surrogate grand kids and invited us to go to the zoo with her for the day. She is so sweet! We had a great time. In fact we enjoyed it so much, we got a year family pass. We've already been 3 times... so these pics are a compilation of a few different trips.

I thought the zoo would basically be the same as the one in Oregon, but I was very wrong. There were so many different animals! I thoroughly enjoyed seeing some new species. Here are a few that we saw:

The gibbon
and some sort of colorful vulture
Ring-tailed Lemurs

Lots of little turtles and some huge tortoises!

Many varieties of tropical birds

Mason loved the birds. (Side note: look how long his hair has gotten. He is often flipping it back and forth and whacking his head against the wall trying to get it out of his face... but this is his chance to see what long hair looks like and how it works for him. What an island boy...)

We took a break mid-zoo to have some shave ice (Nancy's treat!) During this visit, Mason had just severely sprained his knee... so while we waited to see if he needed surgery, Kaiah pushed him around in a little wheelchair. What a good sister :)

They had some of the animals we are used to seeing...

And some more that we aren't used to!

Animals not pictured that stand out to me are the Komodo Dragon, Baboons, and the Spider Monkey, and the bird of paradise, among others.

And speaking of spiders...

Check out this guy! We found him inside the door hinge as we walked into the aviary. You can see how big it is compared with the average sized door hinge! It is a cane spider. And this is what was in our house (thankfully) only once. Anyway... we thought it was dead. But no. it wasn't.

There were also really impressive trees here. Our favorites were the huge monkeypods, crazy rooty Banyans and the colorful rainbow Eucalyptus.

I'm sure we'll be back a couple more times before our pass is up. It's a beautiful place with a lot to see.
