My friend Ticiana, who is a missionary in Australia just sent an update on their ministry. In it she describes a dinner idea that I am going to try with our family! It looks like such a great object lesson. Here is how she describes it:

Our final meal together was a simple lunch of bread, cheese, fruit and chocolate. It was a special
“Silent Lunch” exercise in which we could not talk to one another. We were also not allowed to
serve ourselves any food. With the food set out in the middle of our tables, we needed to be
aware of one another's needs and serve each other as necessary.
When we first introduced the lunch, many thought that they wouldn't get any food, or
would end the meal hungry. As we debriefed together at the end, virtually everyone was satisfied. Many found the experience humbling as it revealed their own selfishness, but also rewarding as they learned to actively serve, meeting the needs of others and taking the focus off themselves.

When I went to Japan I learned that it is rude to pour yourself a drink. I found that it was not a problem waiting for others to make sure I had enough... but it was altogether different with me. I had to really concentrate to make sure everyone else had had enough...
This could be interesting (especially the silent part)! Thanks for the idea Tici :)
